I am very thankful for the opportunity I had to study abroad this summer. It opened my eyes to so many possibilities that are available to students here at EKU, and it transformed the direction of my higher education.

Studying abroad was one of the most amazing things I could have ever done. I learned so much about the culture, the food, and the language. I lived with a host family, it was a mother and her daughter and they were so sweet. They helped in any way they could to make my roommate and my stay as welcoming as possible.

I am currently working as an AmeriCorps Vista with a non-profit in Lexington called the South Eastern Medical Interpreters Association (SEMIA). AmeriCorps Vista is basically like the Peace Corps, but to combat domestic poverty. The goal of SEMIA is to provide accessible healthcare to immigrants and non-English speakers, as well as raising awareness for the rights of these individuals.

Studying abroad in Costa Rica has been one of the best experiences I have had during my undergraduate studies. Along with learning another language, I received a greater concept of issues, places, and people around the world. The people I met there taught me the meaning of generosity, kindness, and hospitality.

"I just received my Master's in Social Work [from U of L] in the last few months. I debated on what I wanted to do with it, but returned to my original interest in working with immigrants and refugees. I took an Americorps position working at Americana Community Center here in Louisville.

"I'm actually in graduate school at the moment... the MSW program at UK (Master of Social Work). As you may remember I had a double major when I was at EKU in both French and Political Science. Social Work combines my interest in activism/social justice with a diverse skills set that will enable me to work in a variety of contexts.
