Japanese Studies Course Offerings

FCC 227  

  • Japanese Culture and Civilization.  Taught in English. Introduction to the unique values and traditions of the Japanese as reflected in their aesthetic, intellectual, and other cultural achievements. .  Fulfills General Education requirement E-3B.

 JPN 101 

  • For Students with little to no Japanese.  Not open to native speakers of Japanese.  An introduction to the grammar and structure of Japanese taught in cultural context. Practice in pronunciation, reading, and writing systems with an emphasis on conversation. Fulfills General Education requirement E-6 and Kentucky Pre-College Curriculum FORL requirements.

 JPN 102 

  • Recommended: JPN 101 or equivalent proficiency. Continuation of JPN 101. Emphasis on conversation. Students entering JPN 102 by referral or placement will receive three hours credit for JPN 101 if they make an "A" in 102. Not open to native speakers of Japanese.  Fulfills General Education requirement E-6 and Kentucky Pre-College Curriculum FORL requirements.

 JPN 201 

  • Recommended: JPN 102 or equivalent proficiency. Continuation of JPN 102. Practice in writing kanji, reading, and speaking on cultural topics for diverse social settings requiring increasingly complex structural patterns. Students entering JPN 201 by referral or placement receive six hours credit for JPN 101 and 102 if they make an "A" or "B" in 201. Not open to native speakers of Japanese.  Fulfills General Education requirement E-6 and Kentucky Pre-College Curriculum FORL requirements.
