Latino Heritage Month 2018 schedule of events

 

Please Join the Dept. Languages, Cultures, and Humanities; the EKU Latino Student Association; and the EKU Office of Multicultural Student Affairs in our annual Latino Heritage Month celebrations!

Sept. 20 – Latino Read-In: SPA studies students and EKU LSA members read selections of literary works by noted Latino authors as well as their own works in celebration of Latino cultures and experiences. 10 am – 1 pm in the Crabbe Library Grande Reading Room.

Sept. 25 – Screening of the movie “Walkout” Latino Heritage Month: Screening of the movie "Walkout" - a 2006 HBO film based on a true story of the 1968 East L.A. walkouts. Starring Alexa Vega, Efren Ramirez and Michael Peña, the film was directed by Edward James Olmos. Followed by a discussion of the impact of the events on today’s civil rights movements. 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm in Crabbe Library 108.

Sept. 27 – Chautauqua Lecture Series presents Bobby Verdugo and Yoli Ríos: “The L.A. School Walkouts: Reflections on 50 Years of Protests and Progress.” Verdugo and Ríos were key organizers of the East L.A. Chicano Walkouts at 5 high schools in East Los Angeles that began on March 8, 1968 and spurred an education rights movement in protest to the discrimination and oppression that confronted the Chicano community. (https://chautauqua.eku.edu/fall-2018-speaker-biographies) Held 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm in the O’Donnell Auditorium, Whitlock Building.

Oct. 3 – Latino Street Fair: Come join us to celebrate the diversity of US Latino and Latin American cultures. Students will perform dances and music from across the Americas, including a march to bring awareness to the conservation of the Amazon Rain Forest. Held 10 am to 2 pm in the EKU Ravine.

Oct. 9 – Strategies for Success Forum: “Líderes Latinos.” Join the EKU Latino community in discussing strategies for recruitment, integration, peer mentoring, career guidance, graduation tactics, and more. Held 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm in the Crabbe Library Room 108.
